Roses

I love Roses. This is something my friend didn't have nor my mother. So...Im learning about them all on my own.

When we lived in Minnesota we had landscaped from scratch (it was new construction) our new home. I bought Rugosa Roses (a type of shrub rose) at a local nursery, not knowing how I would fall in LOVE with this species of shrub rose. I've been searching high and low for some to add to my landscape here in Michigan. Well, lone behold thanks to Google, I found a place in Belleville, Michigan (FYI like 20 minutes from my house) that has 50, yes 50, varaities of Rugosa Roses.

Upon researching them a little bit come to find out that they originated in Ancient Rome along the Appian Way. Well, how funny that is what we are finishing up studying in our homeschool year. They were brought from the area surrounding Rome and somehow landed along the East Coast. B/C they can handle almost any circumstances, the salt water does not bother these roses. There is even a variety called a salt spray Rugosa. They are extremely disease resistant (although aphids can come and go) thats about the extent of problems you will have. And any Rose grower knows, that aphids isn't really a problem....it's a given w/roses. So there is your history for the day!

PLEASE NOTE: The Rose above is NOT a Rugosa Rose. Remember I am still looking and only this week found this nursery. The Rose above is a climbing Rose vining up my old garden gate. Posted by Picasa
