In attempt to clean up the main floor of our house from the clutter of homeschooling 5 (I include myself as I think I learn the most) my wonderful husband conceded to purchasing Billy Bookcases from IKEA, rather than make them. (which he wanted to do) Tonight I finished putting the doors together and on the cases.....and have started putting the books in.
Anyone have a sorting system for their books? I've never done this as I've never had enough bookcase space to keep the majority of my books out? I was thinking of sorting them by category....like obviously series go together, but maybe like all on the civil war era together including fiction, non-fiction, bio's and geography/maps of the time? Or should I keep fiction and non fiction separate? Any ideas or suggestions....Im anxious for something that works. Im going to keep all my theology, bible reference, bibles, and all those books Christians write about various topics upstairs in our family room bookcase--separate from the school stuff. This has kept me busy.
Starting Monday I am going to be attempting a challenge from my friend Gretchen down in Lousiville, who works at the Southern Seminary Bookstore. She mailed me the newest book by the Mahaney Girls and I am going to attempt to rise at 5 a.m. or shortly thereafter in attempt to work on some concepts in the book. The name of the book is....
"Shopping for Time: How to do it all and NOT be overwhelmed"
Hmmmmmmmm....I can't imagine anyone reading that title and saying...
"Ha, I've got it all together...that ones NOT for me!"
Well, this one I think is definately for me! If you've read any of Mom Mahaney and her daughters materials, including their BLOG
Girltalk....then you will know the qualility of their faith in Jesus Christ and will be on Amazon purchasing it. I'll be posting how my 5 a.m. week goes next week~ If any of you have your jaw dropped on the floor right now....believe me, I could use your prayers. For those who don't know me well....I usually stay up until 2-3 a.m. and get up around 9:30 or 10....so this will be drastic for me~

I tend to sort my books by category: mystery, sci-fi, historical. My classics category is both fiction and non-fiction. I find it to be a huge challenge keeping my books organized. I like to keep authors together but sometimes they cross genres. Gaah!
Cousin Lisa :)
For our homeschooling, we keep a bookcase in the living room that has wooden doors that close. That way, we don't have to see the books, binders, and school supplies unless we're using it. I have the top shelf, my older son has the middle shelf, and my younger son has the bottom shelf.
I think organizing by topic is a good idea--perhaps non-fiction on one side of the shelf and fiction on the other side. The older kids' books could be higher up and the younger kids' books on the lower shelves. Mom's books could be at the top.
I love your new bookcases. I wish I had more. I still keep some books in boxes. One box contains books we've read, while another box contains books we haven't gotten to yet. I try to organize by topic so we can easily do unit studies.
Wow - good luck on the 5 am thing! I am a night owl as well, so even if I get up early, I still don't feel like I'm really functioning until about 9am anyway!
As for the books... I think that sorting them by category is a great idea, but personally I would separate fiction and non-fiction. The bookcases are beautiful! Have fun sorting!
Karen,
I totally meant to ask you on the phone the other day how the 5 am thing went? Was there any gain, in your opinion? I had major struggles this morning. Bounced up at 5, but my stomach and back hurt so bad, I could only stumble around a short while before retreating to my chair, and I fought a losing battle with sleep while I read my Bible. Needless to say, I'm not sure if I can even count that one as a real 5am club morning.
I wanted to say I am proud of you and your "let's do it!" spirit by committing to trying out getting up early when you usually are such a night owl. That speaks to me that you are a person with a teachable spirit and that you long to stay flexible and open to what the Lord would bring into your life.
I would love to write more about sorting books, but I have to give you one book recommendation since you are studying the Civil War. "Pink and Say" by Patricia Polacco is a book you simply MUST read aloud to all of your children together. Pretty much gonna guarantee that you can't do it without crying. It is amazing, but since I know you'll believe me and check it out, that's all I'll say.
~Gretchen
P.S. I'm so glad we're friends. :)
