Twas the night before homeschool, when all through the house
Not a creature was stirring, not even my mouse.
The schoolbooks were stacked on the table with care,
In hopes that excitement tomorrow would be there.
The children were nestled all snug in their beds,
While visions of summer days danced in their heads.
And mamma in her t-shirt, and daddy sawing logs,
Had just settled down for her final nights BLOG.
When all of the sudden panic arose,
I sprang from my desk as my blood pressure rose.
Away to the bookshelves I flew like a flash,
Tore open the doors, stubbed my toe as it passed.
The books were lined neatly in alphabetical order
Gave hope that my panic was falsely thought after.
When, what to my wondering eyes should appear,
But so many things to accomplish this year!
With Math, Science, Grammar lying right there,
I knew in a moment I wasn’t prepared.
History, phonics, books to be read;
writing and language—oh, where was my head?
More rapid than eagles my flutterings they came,
And I prayed and asked God for power in HIS name!
"Lord come and help me. Lord, get the fame.
Lord give me patience as I teach in your name.
Lord make me show them, a glimpse of your grace.
Lord make me small as YOU fill this place.
Grant me the love, be my strong tower,
that only you give through your life saving power”
As dry leaves that before the wild hurricane fly,
When they meet with an obstacle, mount to the sky.
God gave me peace as I laid it all down,
as I thanked Him, He started to turn things around.
And then, in a twinkling, I thought of the fun
in teaching my kids, all four, not just one!
I peeked in the cabinet and what did I see?
Many stories passed down through HIS-tory.
I took that book and laid it down
“What joy can be found in teaching them so sound!.”
America & England are something to study;
Presidents, States and foundations of Countries.
Wars fought here and wars fought there,
kingdoms, kings and sovereign heirs.
Oceans, rivers and mountains we see, such an integral part of this Tap-es-try.
Adams Here, Napoleon There, neoclassical painting and fake white hair!
Men with minds and ideas to boot—
spread of ideas that began to take root.
Lewis & Clark what an adventure they had,
a land mass to survey—that added to our pad!
Constitution and government being to stand out;
states rights, industry & slavery—who wins out?
”Westward Ho,” or so they said,
pushing things West—as far as they could get.
War in Mexico, pioneers on the move,
gold and inventions making things improve!
On the horizon a storm has been brewing,
one that neither side was actively pursuing.
A great civil war—like none we’d ever seen.
Tears the country, apart at the seams.
Lincoln to the North & Davis to South.
Life as they knew it was about to cry out.
Slavery abolished, inventions pursued,
the railroad moves forward and rebuilding does too.
All this shows that as we study--
God’s hand has been active lets give Him the glory.
So as the year starts, I’ve come to conclude
that History, Science & Grammar should make me subdued.
For God holds the keys to the day to day tasks,
of shopping and cleaning and teaching them Math.
When fear gets a hold like the earlier thoughts, the Holy Spirit must come and re-route my heart . For God alone holds our lives in His hands, remember that friends when you think you haven’t planned.

I think all homeschooling moms go through that moment of panic before the school year begins. Mine happened in August, but subsided as the school books were ordered and a schedule was developed.
My boys wanted to start school on August 20 and have been going every weekday since, including Labor Day. I'm glad they are motivated, as I'm sure there will be times when they are not. I agree with the emphasis on God's Word. If we taught them nothing else, that would still be sufficient.
