Music for 2008

As my friends locally know, music is a huge part of my life. I play the piano and flute, and to quote Elizabeth Bennett in Pride and Prejudice, I play them,"Very ill indeed". However, from a young age music has been a HUGE part of my life. I remember from early childhood, the record player (yes, records) crackling as it spewed out Tales of the Vienna Woods by Strauss, Waltz of the Flowers by Tchaikovsky, Humoreske by Dvorak. I have my parents to thank for playing classical music and helping to foster a love for such amazing music that is quite forgotten today by my generation. (just my opinion) I still love classical, even more than I did as a kid.

Music is always on, rather my iPod is. I like most genres, but stick mostly to that which focuses on Jesus Christ and His Gospel, Classical, Opera, and the likes of Il Divo, Josh Groban or Travis Cottrell type vocals. I love Sovereign Grace Music. I tend to always sing to anything from the 80's (pop) probably because that is my youth. Thats what I remember. One of my favorite new songs is called "Sanctus" by Travis Cottrell. I've been listening to it for weeks, putting it to memory. I think originally I was drawn by the Latin flavor (the language not the culture) since we dabbled in Latin last year homeschooling. The song has just gripped me. I wanted to post the lyrics, but since I downloaded it from iTunes, I have no lyric sheet. I also couldn't find them online. Bummer. So, I just have to say, purchase the CD Found, or download it. It's amazing. Actually the whole CD is amazing. (Theres my 2008 suggestion for you to purchase)

Recent discussions w/my 7th grade daughter has brought some interesting thoughts into my mind regarding music and where to draw the line. What is acceptable when it's not God focused.

Anyhow....I'm curious if my readers would post their 5 favorite artists/albums. I am hoping to be opened to some new music this year. Also, I'd appreciate any thoughts you may have on how to discern music between teens/adults--helping your teen make choices in music.

Happy New Year

I like it! We went to a game party on New Year's day where each guest had to bring their top 3 CDs to listen to. Good tunes all day. :) So I have somewhat been provoked to think of this. My answers would change from time to time, but right now I really like:

1. "In Memory of Trees" -- Enya

2. "She Must and Shall Go Free" -- Derek Webb

3. "Freewheelin'" -- Bob Dylan

4. "Valley of Vision" -- Sovereign Grace

5. "Incarnation" -- The Gettys (this one's Christmas but I am a HUUUUUUUUUUUUGE fan!)

Thanks Gretchen. I will look these up! Other than Sovereign Grace, I am unfamiliar w/these songs. I don't believe I've heard Valley of Vision. Definately out of my comfort zone! Just what I'm looking for! (I have heard of Enya the Watermark song I've heard)

How about guidelines for music? Any thoughts?

Hugs to you!

Gretchen--are you referring to Keith Getty? I couldn't find an artist by the name of "The Getty's" in iTunes. I am familiar w/Keith Getty and his wife. Two of my favorites are:
See What a Morning and Power of the Cross.

Let me know.

One of my favorite Christmas CDs is The Promise by Michael Card. My favorite song is Jacob's Star. I feel so moved by the entire album.

A newer favorite is Soundforth music. I believe Soundforth is produced by Bob Jones University. I listened to a Soundforth CD while reading Safely Home and think of the book when I hear the music, especially Bow the Knee, my favorite.

I also like classical and opera (Pavarotti).

Yo -- sorry, I just checked back on the questions. YES -- by Gettys I mean Keith Getty. Sorry about that.
